Catch up – Colorado

I’m super behind on documenting what’s been happening the last few weeks, so today starts the Great Catch Up. Because, in the three weeks or so since I last blogged, we’ve spent a week in small town Colorado, made it through Squirm’s eye surgery, and celebrated Squirms’s first birthday party, plus done lots of normal stuff like go to work, do a bit of knitting (only some of which I have proof of), and, I desperately hope, done our last stint of leaf-raking.

Today’s topic – our Thanksgiving trip to Colorado.

We flew into Colorado the Saturday before Thanksgiving, direct into Denver. Squirms was pretty happy on the plane, though was annoyed she had to be held to sleep. Maybe 30 total minutes of screaming/crying which ain’t bad for an infant. After running a few errands in Denver (visited a brewery, picked up diapers, etc), we made the three-hour drive from Denver down to the small town where Matt’s cousin J and his wife M live with their two girls, let’s call them Elsa (age 6) and Anna (age 2.5). Esla was extremely happy to see us, running out to our car in her bare feet (thankfully, it was an unseasonably warm 60 degrees that evening). Anna, eh, she was just happy for guests but wasn’t quite sure what to think of Squirms.

Most of the week was just spent hanging out or preparing for Thanksgiving. We brought our old Wii with us to give them, Elsa being very into math/science and her dad wanting to use video games to show her what her loves of those could lead to; we left with her thoroughly addicted to Mario Kart and quite good at it. We did a day trip to Pueblo to pick up M’s pre-ordered free-range turkey and to get supplies not easily found in their town’s Safeway. I spent an afternoon helping M and her friend with their online statistics class. Matt worked with M to pre-cook veggies and make pies and, day of, put the whole meal together in the church basement. We got to see J, a Mennonite pastor, preach at his church. We just hung out and enjoyed not having chores to do or work to go into.

We also took the time to see the natural beauty of the area. J took us and the girls – M was making pies in the quiet of an empty house – to Vogel Canyon one afternoon.

We also stopped at Pike’s Peak and the Garden of the Gods on the way back to the airport. Except either the altitude or my anxiety got to me on the way up the Peak and the Garden of the Gods was only an OK attraction (though free).

It was a really great trip, though chaotic with three little kids running around.
